Design with Different Sized Quilt Blocks

I usually like to create a written Help Guide whenever we get a question from a customer. But I especially try and get one created when we get the same question a few times.

Last week we got a couple of emails asking if it was possible to make a quilt using different sized quilt blocks. The answer is YES and there are a couple of different ways to do this.

You can create different sized quilt blocks by (1) merging smaller block cells together or (2) resizing the columns and rows in the quilt grid.

I figured some of you might also be wondering if this is possible. You can check out the Help Guides below to walk you through how to do this and hit the ground running on your own quilts featuring different sized quilt blocks!

Happy PreQuilting!

QuiltCon 2026 Sponsors // February 19-22, 2026

We're proud to be sponsoring my favorite quilt show on earth, QuiltCon, for the fourth year in a row. We have decided not to vend this year (mostly because our boys need to stay in school), but I'll be there walking around and doing a demo on the MQG stage. Hope to see you there!

A Note from Laura

I still haven't found my sewjo yet (new suggested lyrics for U2). Every once in a while I'll get to wanting to make a shirt or make an attempt on some pants. But then I think of all the work I'd have to do to even get to the cutting part and my motivation peters out. Do any of you have any words of wisdom on how to overcome the overwhelm of getting started?

In the meantime, I've started participating in some neighborhood ukulele jams. I'm not good by any means, but it's nice to get outside the house, grab a Coca-Cola, and just attempt to play all the notes. I don't think anyone else is good enough to notice how bad I am! I get the same relaxing peace from playing the uke as I do sewing (sans desk cleanup and musical office furniture). I have found it helps lift my mood and get my out of my head.

I was also gifted an annual pass to the Art Gallery of Ontario (AGO) and meandered with my friend through the various exhibits. My favorite was Kazuo Nakamura's Northern Forest. I loved how the subtle pooling of the paint from the scraper creates a visual break between the different patches of color. It made me wonder how I might be able to manipulate fabrics' natural physical attributes and use it as a design feature.

I hope this pause and rest isn't a time of nothing, but rather a banking of ideas and a charging of my battery. And that I'll find the energy to just get started sewing and quilting again soon, free from expectations and timelines. I hope you are all out there happily banking, charging, or making!
